Flies

There are 110,000 different species of flies and they’re found in every part of the inhabited world. Unfortunately, that may include your home too.

The file on flies

Each species of fly has its own habits and living conditions. Let’s take a closer look at this two-winged pest.

  • Law of attraction

Food preparation and disposal, along with air currents, may attract flies to the home.

  • Breeding spots

Some flies can breed and develop in drains and garbage containers, and thus develop populations inside buildings.

  • Running hot and cold

On cool days, a warm building attracts flies, while during hot days, cool air from a building may attract flies.

  • Bacteria abounds

Because flies primarily breed outdoors in manure, garbage and the carcasses of dead animals and travel from place to place, they may carry bacteria into the home.

  • Unique homes

Each fly type has its own habits and preferred living conditions. Fruit flies prefer ripened/rotting fruit, while moth flies prefer drains.

  • Short and not so sweet

Most species of adult flies live up to 25 days, but some aren’t so lucky.

Pest Control

Flies

Flies belong to the order of insects known as Diptera, which means “two wings.” Flies are the fourth largest group of insects, consisting of more than 110,000 different species worldwide and are found in every part of the inhabited world, being most abundant in tropical and subtropical areas.

Entry

Food preparation and disposal, along with air currents, attract flies to the home. They detect the odors of food inside or from garbage containers outdoors. Some flies can breed in drains and garbage containers, and thus develop populations inside buildings.

On cool days, a warm building attracts flies, while during hot days, cool air from a building may attract flies. Because flies primarily breed outdoors in manure, garbage and the carcasses of dead animals, they may carry bacteria into the home.

Fly Control

Different types of flies require different strategies for fly control. Each fly type has its own habits and preferred living conditions. Fruit flies prefer ripened/rotting fruit or fresh garbage, while moth flies prefer drains. House flies primarily breed in fresh manure, while blow flies prefer dead animals or rotting garbage. Positive identification is often a key to discovering active breeding sites.
