FLY FAQs

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE FLIES OR GNATS?

Since both require different methods of treatment, it is critical to identify whether you’re battling gnats or fruit flies.

If the insect is brown with red eyes, it is most likely a fruit fly. Fruit flies breed in fresh fruit – especially bananas – and garbage.

If the insect is tiny and black with long wings and spindly legs, it is likely a fungus gnat that lives in the wet soil of potted plants.

If the insect is brown with red eyes, it is most likely a fruit fly. Fruit flies breed in fresh fruit – especially bananas – and garbage.

Terminix will help you to identify the pest and recommend control solutions.

WHAT ARE THESE SMALL, BLACK FLIES IN MY HOUSE DURING THE FALL AND WINTER?

If they hold their wings flat over their abdomens, then you may be dealing with cluster flies.

These one-quarter-inch flies enter the walls and attics of homes in large numbers to survive the winter.

On warmer days, they may crawl into the living spaces of your home. Once inside the walls, they are difficult to eliminate.

Terminix can evaluate your home and make recommendations for sealing cracks where flies could enter. Treatment will greatly reduce the numbers of flies.

HOW DO I GET RID OF FRUIT FLIES?

The small, brown, red-eyed fruit fly is usually carried inside homes in fresh fruits and vegetables, most often bananas.

Fruit flies can be controlled through the following techniques:

  • Find and discard items in which flies are breeding in the outdoor trash.

  • For the remaining adult flies, create a trap by pouring a few ounces of vinegar into a cup and covering the cup with a plastic wrap secured with tape or a rubber band.

  • Poke a hole about one-eighth to one-quarter inch through the plastic.

  • Place the trap in rooms where the flies are seen.

  • The flies enter through the opening but have difficulty exiting, eventually drowning in the vinegar.

If this does not solve the problem, contact Terminix for a guaranteed solution.

HOW DO I GET RID OF GNATS?

One of the most common gnats found inside the home is the fungus gnat. They are often found near houseplants.

To control fungus gnats:

  • Allow the top two to three inches of soil to dry out.

  • Clean overflow saucers underneath potted plants.

  • Adjust watering schedule to prevent overwatering.

  • Avoid bringing plants indoors with infested containers.

  • Store potting soil in closed containers.

Contact your local Terminix branch for additional help in eliminating your gnat problem.
