Roach control | treatment to prevention

on Monday, July 01, 2013 by Terminix

Cockroaches are some of the oldest surviving insect forms on Earth, predating humans by more than 300 million years. Their durability is one of the reasons why it is difficult for homeowners to achieve effective roach control. For instance, according to Myth Busters, cockroaches are “able to survive radiation doses at 10,000 rads, which is 10x the lethal dose for humans”. Some species of cockroaches can survive being submerged in water for 15 minutes, and some can even live headless for up to a month.

There are also many different types of cockroaches—smokybrown, American, German and oriental, to name a few. Because they need an opening as little as 1/16th of an inch to enter your home, effective roach control starts with you sealing as many exterior cracks and holes as possible on the outside of your home.

Additional preventative measures

An effective way to deal with large, outdoor cockroach species, such as smokybrowns, is to limit their potential harborages near your home. Move firewood away from your home, store it off the ground and cover it with plastic to keep it dry. Discard piles of lumber and bricks, and minimize the use of heavy ground cover, like ivy, near your home. Keep layers of mulch to about two inches deep, and keep mulch at least 12 inches from the foundation.

German cockroaches are the most prolific breeders among all cockroaches. They hide in your bathrooms and kitchens to be as close as possible to food and moisture sources. Therefore, it’s important to keep food in tightly sealed storage containers, and you should not leave your pet’s food and water sitting out overnight.

American cockroaches thrive in warm, damp environments such as sewers, steam tunnels, basements, crawl spaces and boiler rooms. In southern states where this cockroach lives outdoors, successful pest control involves possible treatments to the attic and crawl space, as well as finding and treating likely cockroach harborages over the entire property.

Do-it-yourself products can help you temporarily control many types of cockroach infestations, roach bait may be somewhat effective, too, but this is limited by the fact that every cockroach in a population has to feed on the bait before the infestation can be eliminated. Knowing where to apply each product effectively is where the experience of a professional pest control service is helpful.
